'Menace of Mayfair' finally brought to justice

08/10/2009

A sophisticated, charming and persuasive jeweller aptly named the ‘Menace of Mayfair’ has finally been brought to justice after years of cheating his victims out of watches, jewellery and family heirlooms worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

23 Essex Street’s Mark Fenhalls successfully prosecuted the defendant, Andrew Batchelor, who has been at large since the nineties. Initially he was based in Scotland and was nicknamed ‘Glasgow Goldfinger’; after many bankruptcies he emerged in London’s Mayfair to recommence his fraudulent activities.

‘Superintendent Matt Parkes, of the London Regional Asset Recovery Team, said: ''Andrew Batchelor has caused a great deal of anguish to his victims, depriving them of their valued possessions with no financial remuneration.
''This successful prosecution shows we will pursue persons who cause such harm to the public, prosecute them and take back all the proceeds of their crime.''’
