23 Essex Street is one of these sets. We have been the only contributor to the criminal prosecutions and sentencing chapter in the latest publication of Burnett-Hall on Environmental Law and our members have considerable experience of prosecuting and defending environmental offences, against both individuals and large corporations. We regularly act for the Environment Agency, and our close relationship with them is demonstrated by the fact that not only have members spent time there on secondment, but we also provide them with training on issues such as disclosure, public interest immunity and interviewing under PACE. Recent work highlights have included:
Environment Agency v Anglian Water Services Ltd: we prosecuted this major water company for substantial breaches of its license, which caused serious pollution in the Newmarket area.
Environment Agency v JK Environment Ltd: this prosecution concerned employees illegally disposed of septic tank waste in highway ditches.
Environment Agency v Atlantic Waste (Thornhaugh) Ltd: a prosecution relating to illegal waste disposal at a landfill site.
Environment Agency v Eurocare Environmental Services Ltd: we defended this complex case relating to the transport and disposal of clinical waste.
Environment Agency v Shell UK Oil Products Ltd: a prosecution for diesel pollution at a service station.
