23 Essex Street has a distinguished record in civil cases concerning the police, members having appeared as counsel in trials and important appellate decisions over many years. Members appear both for claimants and for defendant police forces and other bodies.
In these cases, knowledge of the context of the litigation is critical to success: how criminal investigations and proceedings work; the documents used and generated; the laws and formal rules which govern police officers; the unwritten rules which govern the conduct of police officers in practice; the procedures applicable to discrete topics such as the management of CHIS (police informers).
The team provides in-house training for members.
